Nagano prefecture (長野県) & the Japan Alps

Nagano is located northwest of Tokyo. If you take the Shinkansen (bullet train), it takes 1.5 hours to get from Tokyo to Nagano City.
Nagano Prefecture stretches over 200km from north to south and is the fourth largest prefecture in Japan. Although the culture and climate differ between the north and south, it is generally rich in nature and attracts tourists.

A series of high mountains runs along the west side of the prefecture, dividing it into the border with neighboring prefectures. This mountain range is called the Japan Alps.

The Japan Alps are divided into three parts, the North, Central, and South, and all of them are national parks of Japan. The altitude is over 3000m, and they are sometimes described as the roof or spine of Japan. Some places are relatively easy to access using gondolas, while others require several days of walking.

The Northern Japan Alps and Matsumoto (松本)

The Northern Japan Alps stretches from the Sea of Japan to Kamikochi, stretching for about 140km. The mountain range stretches from north to south and has many branches, each of which can be enjoyed as a hike.

Our base is in Matsumoto. It is located one hour south of Nagano City by train. Kamikochi, a famous tourist destination and the gateway to the peaks of Northern alps is located at the southern end of the Northern Alps. It takes about an hour and a half by train and bus from central Matsumoto.

The Northern Japan Alps has better access to trailheads, plenty of mountain huts, and the terrain, scenery, and plants are all great places to guide from summer to autumn.
